ANDROID GO - LIGHTER, SMARTER & OPTIMIZED ANDROID OS

Overview :

Android GO is a new free product by Google to launch budget-friendly Android smartphones with high-end functionalities, It's is very lightweight version of the upcoming Android O, but it's specially designed to run on smartphones that have 1 GB, or even 512 MB, of RAM.

What is Android GO?

Android Go was announced during the opening keynote of the Google I/O developers conference in Mountain. Google is trying something else. Now Android Go is the internal name that the company has adopted for Android O. This is clearly mentioned in Google’s Android Developer blogpost.

Android Go is designed around 3 key points as the company explains it.

1. Google says it is “optimizing Android O to run smoothly and efficiently on entry-level devices.”

2. Google has redesigned apps in this optimized version of Android O in order to ensure the apps from the company take less storage space, use less memory, and more importantly save on mobile data.

3. Play Store will highlight apps designed for low-end devices.

Google focused on devices with very low specs, users with limited connectivity and multilingual capabilities. And it can run on devices with less than 1GB of memory. The Play Store is going to highlight apps that can run on these cheap devices.

These apps should be less than 10MB, work well when you’re not connected to the internet and support devices with slow systems-on-a-chip and little RAM.

Sameer Samat (VP at Google) talked about Chrome’s data saver as an essential feature to load more pages with a minimal amount of cell data. But the company doesn’t plan to stop there.

Android Go seems like a smart move to make it run on crazy cheap phones and slow networks.

  • Is Android GO new operating system of Android?
“Android Go is not a new version of Android, it’s not a different Android, it’s a project name inside Google.”

  • Is Android GO supported for all devices?
No, it's not supported to all devices , google will develop special smart phones for Android GO, those devices only can supported this light weight OS.

  • What is the configuration of Android GO device?
Android GO device will be with low RAM(like 512 MB / 1 GB only), OS is android 'O', there’s a number of animations that are turned off, a number of things that are memory-intensive like that in the UI that are nice, memory-intensive and optimized.

  •  What about OEM's - from developer's perspective?
Samat says Android Go is API identical to the ‘main’ Android O, so developers need not worry about fragmentation. For the OEMs, he believes they deal with enough old versions of Android that working with a single, different configuration of a new Android version will actually be a relief.

  • What is YouTube GO?
YouTube Go is an example of the apps coming to Android Go, and unlike the full app available to Android O it lets you preview frames of a video and select the quality before you begin streaming it. You can also download YouTube Go videos over Wi-Fi for offline viewing absolutely free.

  • Will I got Android Go update on my existing device?
Almost certainly no. Samat says the focus of the Android Go project is on new devices only, so don’t expect your existing entry-level phone to get Android O’s Go configuration.

  • What is the release date of Android GO?
The first devices of Android Go won't land until 2018, but if a lower-end device gets updated to Android O before then it could also benefit from Android Go.

Google said Android Go would be available for budget phones in 2018, though it has not confirmed where these devices will be sold.
